Field Research Practice, Unud Indonesian Literature Students Sharpen Research Skills in Karangasem

`

Denpasar – The Indonesian Literature Study Program at Udayana University held a field research training activity for fourth-semester students of the 2023 cohort over two days and one night. Unlike previous research trainings which were usually conducted in May, this year’s training was held in April, on Saturday and Sunday (April 26–27, 2025), just before the Mid-Semester Examination (UTS) of the even semester 2025. The research took place in three villages in Karangasem Regency: Perasi, Subagan, and Kecicang. The meeting point and overnight stay location for students and lecturers was at Kumara Sandi Kindergarten Education Foundation in Perasi, Karangasem District.

This field training was attended by 59 students and 19 lecturers, who were assigned to guide each student group. There were 23 Indonesian literature students concentrating in linguistics, divided into four groups, and 36 students concentrating in literature, divided into six groups. This training is part of the teaching program for the Research Methods course offered by the Indonesian Literature Program at Udayana University. It aims to develop students’ research skills, test the theories learned in class in real-world situations, and train critical thinking and students’ sensitivity toward linguistic and literary phenomena, especially those present in the research environment.

The first day began with a briefing by the lecturers, followed by students heading to the field in the afternoon to find informants—either through spontaneous field visits or pre-arranged appointments. Each group went to their designated research location according to their chosen topic. Data collection continued until the evening, after which students were instructed to return to the meeting point.

Next, students were guided to prepare for a community service activity in the form of a public speaking workshop, delivered by two lecturers from the Indonesian Literature Program: Eirenne Pridari Sinsya Dewi, S.S., M.Ed., and I Gusti Ngurah Mayun Susandhika, S.S., M.Hum. The workshop was held at the Wantilan of Perasi Traditional Village from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. local time. The event was attended by several lecturers, including Prof. Dr. I Wayan Cika, M.S., Prof. Dr. I Wayan Pastika, M.S., Prof. Dr. Dra. Ni Made Dhanawaty, M.S., Dra. Pt.N Widarsini, M.Hum., Dr. I Gusti Ayu Agung Mas Triadnyani, S.S., M.Hum., Jalu Norva Illa Putra, S.S., M.A., Ida Bagus Gede Dharma Putra, S.S., M.A., and Ni Komang Diah Restu Swari, S.Pd., M.A. In addition, selected students from each research group, representatives from the traditional village, four local hamlet heads, and the head along with thirty members of the local youth organization (Sekaa Teruna Teruni) also attended. Participants were given materials on how to speak well and correctly in public and tips for building self-confidence. They were then invited to practice the material through a public self-introduction exercise.

The second day of the training began with breakfast. Students then returned to the field to collect additional data if the previous day’s collection was insufficient. Data collection on the second day was brief. By noon, students returned to the meeting point for lunch together and began tidying up their personal and group belongings. At 1 p.m. local time, lecturers and students took documentation photos as evidence of the field research activity and then returned home using their respective vehicles.

With the completion of this two-day research training, it is hoped that Indonesian Literature students at Udayana University can further develop their academic skills and deepen their sensitivity and understanding of sociocultural conditions. Students are also expected to apply theory directly in practice. This activity is not only aimed at fulfilling course requirements but also at strengthening students’ methodological understanding. Moreover, it helps improve their sense of responsibility, scientific knowledge, and teamwork—valuable assets for future assignments and scientific writing projects.
